The Grape Growers of Ontario are proud to announce
Wes and Briar Wiens as Ontario’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2011

St. Catharines, ON (Thursday March 17, 2011): On behalf of the Grape Growers of Ontario Board of Directors, Chair Bill George is pleased to announce Wes and Briar Wiens were selected as Ontario’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2011. The Wiens of Gemmrich W. Nursery in Niagara on-the-Lake received this top provincial honour at an awards ceremony on Friday March 11, 2011 in Ajax, Ontario

The Wiens were chosen from a group of six farmers from across Ontario that exemplify and demonstrate innovation and progress in their agricultural careers. As a third generation propagator of grape vines, the Wiens commitment to adaptation, innovation and quality is reflected in their 60% market share of the Canadian grape vine industry. Within the last five years, the Nursery’s production has almost doubled, from grafting 800,000 vines in 2006 to 1,400,000 vines in 2010.

As a member of the Grape Growers of Ontario (GGO), Chair Bill George noted “Wes and Briar are an integral part of our grower family and we value their commitment and support to our industry.  The Grape Growers of Ontario was pleased to nominate the Wiens family for this prestigious award.”

“Farming in today’s economic environment requires dedication and a commitment to change,” said Debra Marshall, GGO Board of Director from Prince Edward County. “Adding a complete line of services to their business model from potted vines, custom grafting and brokering for imported vines makes them unique in the nursery industry.”

Wes and Briar will represent Ontario at the National competition being held in Brandon, Manitoba where they will compete for Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmer title.

The Grape Growers of Ontario is the official organization that represents over 484 actively producing grape growers of 15,000 acres in the province’s four viticulture areas: Niagara Peninsula, Pelee Island, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County.
