Host of Amazing Race Canada, Canadian Olympic Gold Medal Athlete. Jon Montgomery’s life has been a whirlwind since his Olympic win in skeleton racing at the Vancouver Whistler Olympics in 2010. His big-time podium moment and his now-famous victory “beer-walk” through Whistler Village have paved the way for Montgomery to continue to find himself on Canadian TV.

Today, as the host of The Amazing Race Canada, Jon travels across the country, and all over the world, filming and sharing insights with audiences of all stripes on what makes Canada great and why the goals we set for ourselves are only as achievable as we believe they are.

Jon Montgomery, celebrated Canadian skeleton racer and charismatic television host, is set to be the celebrity guest at this year's annual Grape Growers of Ontario celebrity luncheon. Jon captured the nation's heart with his thrilling gold medal victory at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. His infectious enthusiasm and down-to-earth personality have since made him a beloved television personality, best known for hosting "The Amazing Race Canada." 

Jon led contestants through unique challenges at local wineries Chateau Des Charmes and Pillitteri's Lakeview Vineyard Equipment on "The Amazing Race Canada." These challenges highlighted the intricacies and dedication involved in grape growing and winemaking. His firsthand experience with these local vineyards makes him an even more fitting and exciting guest for our community of grape growers, producers, and winery owners.

In 2023, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mary Walsh as the celebrity guest for their annual luncheon. Mary Walsh, a distinguished Canadian actress, comedian, and writer, brought her vibrant humor and sharp wit to the event, engaging attendees with her remarkable career and contributions to the arts.

Mary Walsh is best known as a founding member of the iconic Canadian sketch comedy show “This Hour Has 22 Minutes”, where she created and performed some of the show's most beloved characters, including the irrepressible political commentator, Marg Delahunty. Her work on the show has earned her multiple Gemini Awards and a Canadian Screen Award, highlighting her talent for blending satire with insightful social commentary.

Beyond her work on “This Hour Has 22 Minutes”, Walsh has had a prolific career in film, television, and theatre. She has appeared in numerous films, such as “New Waterford Girl” and “Mambo Italiano” and has been featured in acclaimed television series like “Republic of Doyle” and “Hatching, Matching and Dispatching”. Her versatility as an actress and comedian has made her a cherished figure in Canadian entertainment.

Walsh is also an accomplished writer, having penned several books and plays that showcase her unique voice and comedic perspective. Her memoir, “Crybaby!”, provides a candid and humorous look at her life and career, resonating with readers and critics alike.

In addition to her artistic achievements, Mary Walsh is a passionate advocate for mental health and social issues. She has been recognized for her work in raising awareness and promoting change, earning her the Order of Canada for her contributions to Canadian culture and society.

In 2022, the Grape Growers of Ontario had the distinct honor of hosting Mark Tewksbury as the celebrity guest for their annual luncheon. Mark Tewksbury, a celebrated Canadian swimmer and Olympic gold medalist, brought a spirit of excellence and inspiration to the event, sharing his remarkable journey and achievements in the world of sports.

Mark Tewksbury's illustrious career is highlighted by his stunning performance at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke. This victory cemented his status as one of Canada’s premier athletes and a national hero. In addition to his Olympic success, Tewksbury has won numerous medals at the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication to swimming.

Beyond his accomplishments in the pool, Tewksbury has made significant contributions as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and as a motivational speaker. His courage in publicly coming out as gay in 1998 paved the way for greater acceptance and visibility for LGBTQ+ athletes. He has been a prominent voice for inclusion and diversity in sports, earning him numerous achievements, including being named a Companion of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest honors.

Tewksbury's leadership extends to his role as a mentor and advocate within the Olympic movement. He has served on the board of directors for the Canadian Olympic Committee and was a prominent figure in the successful bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Mark Tewksbury's participation in the 2022 luncheon brought a message of resilience, achievement, and inclusivity to the celebration. His extraordinary career and unwavering commitment to advocacy reflect the values of determination and community spirit that the GGO uphold. 

In 2019, the GGO had the pleasure of welcoming Brent Butt as the celebrity. Brent Butt, a renowned Canadian actor and comedian, brought his signature humor and engaging storytelling to the event, captivating attendees with his comedic brilliance.

Brent Butt is best known as the creator and star of the hit television series “Corner Gas”, which became one of Canada’s most beloved sitcoms. The show, set in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, humorously portrays small-town life and has garnered widespread acclaim, winning numerous awards, including the Gemini Award for Best Comedy Program or Series. “Corner Gas” enjoyed six successful seasons and even spawned a feature film and an animated series, further cementing its place in Canadian pop culture.

In addition to “Corner Gas”, Butt has had a successful career in stand-up comedy, performing across Canada and internationally. His comedic style, known for its sharp wit and relatable observations, has earned him a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim. He has received the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Male Stand-up and has been featured on numerous television specials.

Beyond his work in comedy, Brent Butt is also a talented writer and producer, contributing significantly to the Canadian entertainment industry. His ability to create relatable and enduring characters has made him a prominent figure in Canadian television and comedy.

The 2019 luncheon, highlighted by Butt's presence, was a memorable and entertaining event for all who attended.

In 2018, Rick Mercer, beloved Canadian comedian and television personality, brought his sharp wit and keen social commentary to the event, delighting attendees with his unique perspective on Canadian life.

Rick Mercer's career is marked by his significant contributions to Canadian television and comedy. He is best known for his work on “The Rick Mercer Report”, a show that combined satirical news segments, comedic monologues, and on-location reporting. The show ran for 15 seasons on CBC, becoming a staple of Canadian television and earning numerous accolades, including multiple Gemini and Canadian Screen Awards.

Before “The Rick Mercer Report”, Mercer co-created and starred in “This Hour Has 22 Minutes”, a satirical news program that has been a mainstay on Canadian television since its inception. His ability to blend humor with incisive social and political commentary has made him a household name and an influential figure in Canadian media

In addition to his television success, Mercer is an accomplished author. His books, such as “Rick Mercer Report: The Book” and “Final Report”, have been bestsellers, offering readers a deeper look into his comedic insights and experiences.

The 2018 luncheon, enriched by Mercer's presence, was a memorable and engaging event for all attendees.

In 2017 we had the honor of hosting Chris Hadfield as the celebrity guest for our annual luncheon. Chris Hadfield, a renowned Canadian astronaut and engineer, brought a touch of the extraordinary to the event, sharing his remarkable journey and achievements in space exploration.

Chris Hadfield's career is a testament to human curiosity and perseverance. He is best known for his time as the commander of the International Space Station (ISS) during Expedition 35, making him the first Canadian to command the ISS. His tenure aboard the ISS was marked by his ability to communicate the wonders of space to the public through social media, captivating millions with stunning photographs and insightful commentary from space.

Hadfield's accolades are numerous and diverse. He is a recipient of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors, recognizing his significant contributions to science and education. Additionally, he has received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. His illustrious career and dedication to sharing the wonders of space with the world reflect the spirit of innovation and community that the Grape Growers of Ontario embody. The 2017 luncheon, graced by Hadfield's stories and insights, remains a highlight in the history of the annual event.

In 2016, we were thrilled to welcome Gerry Dee as our celebrity guest for the annual luncheon. Gerry Dee, a celebrated Canadian actor and comedian, brought his signature humor and charm to the event, adding a delightful twist to the year's festivities. Known for his quick wit and relatable comedy, Dee has carved out a distinguished career in the entertainment industry.

Gerry Dee's achievements span across various facets of comedy and television. He gained national prominence as a finalist on the fifth season of the NBC reality show “Last Comic Standing”, where his unique comedic style captivated audiences. However, Dee is perhaps best known for his hit television series “Mr. D”, in which he stars as the title character. The show, which aired on CBC for eight successful seasons, is a comedy based on his real-life experiences as a high school teacher, blending humor with insightful observations on the education system.

In addition to his television success, Gerry Dee has authored a book, “Teaching: It's Harder Than It Looks”, which became a bestseller and further solidified his reputation as a comedian with a unique perspective. In 2015, the Grape Growers of Ontario had the pleasure of welcoming Tim Hicks as the celebrity guest for their annual luncheon. Tim Hicks, a Canadian country music singer-songwriter hailing from St. Catharines, Ontario, brought his hometown pride and celebrated musical talent to this prestigious event. Known for his high-energy performances and authentic country sound, Hicks has made significant waves in the Canadian music scene.

Hicks has multiple platinum-certified singles and has been nominated for several Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) awards. In 2014, he was awarded the Rising Star Award at the CCMAs, a testament to his rapid ascent in the country music world. His debut album, “Throw Down”, received critical acclaim and included hit singles like "Get By" and "Hell Raisin Good Time," which resonated with fans and established him as a prominent figure in country music

The 2015 luncheon featuring Tim Hicks was a memorable event, underscoring the importance of supporting local artists and celebrating their contributions to both the music industry and the community. His participation brought a unique blend of entertainment and local pride, making it a standout year for the Grape Growers of Ontario's annual celebration.

The GGO Annual Celebrity Luncheon was honored to host Richard (Rick) Hansen as our distinguished celebrity guest in 2014. Rick Hansen is a celebrated Canadian athlete and activist, known for his remarkable achievements in both sports and advocacy for people with disabilities.

Hansen first gained international fame with his incredible "Man In Motion World Tour," which he embarked on in 1985. Over 26 months, Hansen traveled over 40,000 kilometers through 34 countries in his wheelchair, raising awareness and funds for spinal cord injury research and accessibility initiatives. This monumental journey not only demonstrated his extraordinary physical endurance but also highlighted the potential of individuals with disabilities.

Hansen's athletic prowess is matched by his relentless commitment to advocacy. He founded the Rick Hansen Foundation, which focuses on creating accessible and inclusive communities, funding groundbreaking research, and supporting individuals with spinal cord injuries. His work has significantly advanced opportunities and quality of life for countless people.

Rick Hansen's numerous accolades include being named a Companion of the Order of Canada, receiving the Order of British Columbia, and being inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. In 2013, the GGO was thrilled to feature Bryan Baeumler as our celebrity guest. Bryan Baeumler is a renowned Canadian television host, entrepreneur, and expert contractor, celebrated for his contributions to home renovation and improvement television.

Baeumler's career in the television industry is marked by a series of highly successful shows on HGTV Canada, including "House of Bryan," "Disaster DIY," "Leave It to Bryan," and "Bryan Inc." His engaging on-screen presence and extensive knowledge of construction and renovation have made him a trusted and beloved figure among viewers. Baeumler's shows not only entertain but also provide valuable insights and practical advice for homeowners undertaking their own projects.

In 2012, we had the pleasure of welcoming Steve Smith as our celebrity guest. Steve Smith is a celebrated Canadian actor, writer, and comedian, best known for his iconic portrayal of the lovable handyman Red Green.

Smith's career took off with the creation of "The Red Green Show," a long-running Canadian television comedy series that combined sketch comedy with inventive DIY projects. As the show's creator, writer, and star, Smith brought to life the endearing and hilariously resourceful character of Red Green, whose quirky wisdom and duct-tape solutions became beloved by audiences across North America. As a national affairs writer and political columnist for the Toronto Star, Hébert provides keen insights into Canadian politics, often highlighting the complexities and nuances of policy and governance. Her thoughtful commentary has earned her a loyal readership and respect across the political spectrum.

In addition to her work with the Toronto Star, Hébert is a regular contributor to both CBC's "The National" and Radio-Canada, where her analysis and perspectives are highly valued. In 2010, we had the privilege of hosting Joannie Rochette as our esteemed celebrity guest. Joannie Rochette is a renowned Canadian physician and retired competitive figure skater, celebrated for her remarkable achievements on the ice and her dedication to the field of medicine

Rochette's figure skating career is highlighted by her stunning performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where she won the bronze medal. Her courageous and graceful performance, just days after the sudden passing of her mother, captured the hearts of millions and earned her widespread admiration. Rochette is also a six-time Canadian national champion, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to the sport.

Following her retirement from competitive skating, Rochette pursued a career in medicine, earning her medical degree and becoming a physician. Her transition from sports to medicine exemplifies her resilience, determination, and commitment to helping others.

In 2009, GGO had the honor of featuring Peter Mansbridge as our distinguished celebrity guest. Peter Mansbridge is a revered British-Canadian news anchor, widely recognized for his exceptional career in broadcast journalism.

Mansbridge's illustrious career spans over five decades, during which he became the face of CBC News. As the chief correspondent and anchor of "The National," Canada's flagship nightly newscast, Mansbridge reported on some of the most significant events in recent history, from global conflicts to pivotal political moments. His authoritative presence and calm demeanor made him a trusted voice in Canadian households

Beyond his role on "The National," Mansbridge has conducted numerous in-depth interviews with world leaders and prominent figures, earning a reputation for his incisive questioning and journalistic integrity. His work has garnered numerous awards, including a lifetime achievement award from the RTDNA Canada and the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors.

In 2008, we were delighted to welcome Don Cherry as our celebrity guest at the GGO Annual Celebrity Luncheon. Don Cherry, beloved Canadian icon, celebrated for his multifaceted career as a former ice hockey player, coach, and television commentator.

Cherry's journey in hockey began as a player in the minor leagues, eventually leading to his role as a coach in the NHL, where he earned acclaim for his tenure with the Boston Bruins. Under his leadership, the Bruins became a formidable team, known for their aggressive style and competitive spirit. Cherry's coaching prowess was recognized with the Jack Adams Award in 1976, honoring him as the NHL's top coach.

Transitioning to broadcasting, Don Cherry became a household name as the colorful and outspoken co-host of "Coach's Corner" on Hockey Night in Canada. His vibrant personality, distinctive fashion sense, and unabashed opinions endeared him to fans across the country. Cherry's commentary not only entertained but also sparked conversations about the sport, making him a cherished figure in Canadian hockey culture.

In 2007, the GGO Annual Celebrity Luncheon proudly featured Rex Murphy as our esteemed celebrity guest. Rex Murphy is a distinguished Canadian commentator, author, and intellectual, known for his sharp wit, eloquent prose, and insightful analysis.

Murphy's career in journalism spans several decades, during which he has become a respected voice in Canadian media. He is best known for his work on CBC Television, where he provided thought-provoking commentary on "The National" and hosted the weekly radio program "Cross Country Checkup," engaging Canadians in lively and meaningful discussions on current affairs.

As an author, Murphy has penned numerous articles and essays, offering profound reflections on political and social issues. His distinctive style, marked by keen observations and a mastery of the English language, has earned him a loyal readership and critical acclaim.

In 2006, we were honored to welcome the illustrious Dan Aykroyd as our celebrity guest at the GGO Annual Celebrity Luncheon. A renowned Canadian actor and comedian, Dan Aykroyd has made an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

Best known as one of the original cast members of "Saturday Night Live," Aykroyd's unique comedic style and memorable characters have entertained audiences for decades. He co-wrote and starred in iconic films such as "The Blues Brothers" and "Ghostbusters," both of which have become cultural touchstones.

Beyond his work in comedy and film, Aykroyd is also a talented musician and entrepreneur. He is a co-founder of the House of Blues, a chain of live music concert halls and restaurants, and has successfully launched several brands, including Crystal Head Vodka, which has garnered international acclaim.
